I'll say it again, people will rise or fall to the level of expectations (most people anyway). I'd like to watch some of your students train---I'll bet I would see good effective technique, along with a lot of heart! I had a kid once who I knew would never go far, he was in lkeg braces. But TKD did help him, per his physician, get rid of those braces. I think its very short sighted to say this is not the art for you because you cannot do it. I think its more appropriate to say, you arw a challenge to me and my traching and let me help you. After all it is far easier to hurt than to help. This method is one of many from my snake boxing days. I didn't include certain elements that didn't really pertain to the spearhand. But yes indeed, breathing exercises, and eventually speed comes.   It was important to have correct technique while striking the body because the untrained or unconditioned hand will cause the fingers to flex causing problems or breakage.   Jye --- On Mon, 12/29/08, Dennis Overall wrote: Dynamic tension via dun jun ho up (deep breathing exercise) and proper bone alignment daily, add speed when striking. I don't think it's appropriate to say who this art is for based on physical appearance, look at samo hung (think that's his name) he's a fat guy who has learned to work with his size, weight etc. I think it's better to say this club stresses being physically fit.   Jye --- On Mon, 12/29/08, Frank Clay wrote: I think its very short sighted to say this is not the art for you because you cannot do it. --__--__-- Message: 6 From: Ray To: The_Dojang Date: Mon, 29 Dec 2008 19:04:12 -0800 Subject: [The_Dojang] Alexandria International Open Taekwondo Chips Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net 3rd Alexandria International Open Taekwondo Championships Alexandria, Egypt January 29 -- February 1, 2009 For more info: serjacko_egypt@yahoo.com http://www.alexwtc.com --__--__-- Message: 7 To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Mon, 29 Dec 2008 23:06:54 -0500 From: zisheged@aol.com Subject: [The_Dojang] Re:Each school is different Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net How terrible would it be if all tkd schools were identical? I have a colleague that emphasizes sparring and produces some excellent fighters. I know another school that does a lot of Muk Yum. In MY school its a heavy emphasis on conditioning. I specifically said that it's what I do, not preaching to anyone. I have no difficulty with anyone who modifies requirements as to age etc in THEIR school. I think you can see where I am coming from. I do not have a large student base..just a group of men and women that have phenomenal conditioning and do their art the way I want them to.? When a student makes black belt we spend a load of time refining technique. But when that student is a blackbelt he/she can do everything that a blackbelt is supposed to do. Hey...what about the dedicated woman age 70 who can't do a spinning heal kick??? She doesn't come to my school is the answer. And without belaboring the point.... no not everything is for everyone. I can't play basketball too well so I don't pretend. If someone is infirm and old...they can't do martial arts in my dojang...sorry.? I also have some young men who are very athletic and several retired military types who are old force recon and special forces dudes...quite a mix of people...what I like to do is challenge the more fit hard chargers and also teach good practical self defense to the others...I used to think along the lines as some of you and did a ton of conditioning drills and I actually ran a lot of people out of my classes by doing that..non intentionally but I saw what I was creating...I personally came to the realization that if you are running people out by doing a ton of conditioning drills and beating people down than you are basically being SELFISH...I was creating an environment to have a bunch of guys that I could tussle, throw, and grapple with and nothing more...not a bad situation and it helped my training a lot...now that I have grown older I realize that the people who actually need to learn self defense the most aren't the 25 year old studs who are in fantastic shape but the blind man I trained for a year who has to ride that bus every night by himself with his cane through some very bad areas of Daytona Beach...and the middle aged business men who work in Orlando and have to travel all over the city, and the special education women teachers who might have to use some Hapkido to get out of a bad situation...now don't get me wrong..I don't run a touchy feeley group of tree hugging classes....everyone knows how to take a hard fall,, do killers rolls...and they don't tap on joint locks or chokes until the pain is very real, and you don't want to be on the wrong end of a knife blade around these people..but to me NOW in my life I realize that being a good teacher means more than looking at someone and judging them on the surface...being a real teacher means you take people in and try to make them better...yes it's a lot more work on you as a teacher but my feeling is that if I help someone one time get out of a life or death situation then that is worth more to my Karma than watching 25 studs do a bunch of leg lifts....just my opinion and as usual it ain't worth that much... I think the basics of physical fitness are necessary for the martial arts and I want to implement a "more documented format" for this but I haven't come across a good standard. Does anyone have a format they go by that they would be willing to share? Personal trainers have diagnosis tests that not only test for personal fitness but also against age group norms with levels of excellent, good, normal, etc., for each group.
