We can't give 'Z' a hard time because that's his school and how he wants to run it. True I don't agree with the statement that "tkd isn't for..." but realistically, if a potential student doesn't like that they are fortunate enough to have PLENTY of TKD schools to choose from; unless they're like me wanting to get back to ITF but live in WTF world...lol.   Jye --- On Wed, 12/31/08, Frank Clay wrote: I had a student who had severe MS and could barely stand. So I didn't give him pure TJQ, I gave him some hard quigong too becasue of its isomteric nature. I'm not sure if the training did anything for him other than improve his balance a little but I'll take it. There was no rank, no money and it was a learning experience for me. I learned what to do and what not to do. Remember you will also be infirm. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Now don't get me wrong..I don't ONLY exclude for fitness. I ALSO exclude for arrogance! Nasty kids or adults, wise asses and disrespectful people are likewise shown the door.? I have my school in a comprehensive gym/cultural site. I've had two or three kids come to me for lessons that were grotesquely overweight. I advised?the parent to enroll his sons in the kids gym. One returned to me several months later and is progressing nicely. The other couldn't cut it. Se la vie. If persons are eager to self defend keep in mind that broken bones, broken bodies and excuses won't make it. Consider tae chi, or senior self defense classes. How in the world will someone that is sick, heavy, diseased be able to run a mile, do 30 push ups, 50 sit ups or one hundred punches with force (my brown?belt requirement)??? Who amongst us is willing to award a black belt to someone who doesn't do forms well, spars poorly and runs out of gas half way through a class??My stock of fairy dust is depleted !?I won't debate my arrogance while I know I produce excellent martial artists. I don't understand what some guys here don't get. I'm not saying the weaker shouldn't train in the arts, I'm saying that I WON'T accept them. I'm only one guy amongst all you excellent masters!? Just my miserable 2 cents...it?IS the destiny of an acorn to become an oak and all because there are mountains does not mean that all of us have to climb them. I would like to see that my school could effectively spar a Kyokoshin school. Talk about tough!!!!!!!! Zeishe --__--__-- Message: 3 From: Frank Clay To: the_dojang Date: Wed, 31 Dec 2008 13:00:15 -0600 Subject: [The_Dojang] Well put Dennis Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dennis, I rmeember my parents filling out such an application many moons ago, and I was interviewed by the then third dan, now eith dan, who was to take me in. He asked me why I wanted to do martial art. As a kid, that is a hard question to answer but since I was into Kung Fu movies I think you know where my answer went - lol. That was used as a teachable moment and it has always stayed with me. I'd like to point out that I believe my original statement was misunderstood. I am not claiming that martial art cured anyone. I'm claiming that it helped by conditioning him. I don't run a commercial school anymore and only take in students on an as I see fit basis but there is more that I look for than being a young stud in the words of Mike T. I'm not claiming to be better than anyone but I, like you, try to teach classical martial art (whatever that is) which is based in reality and on the philosophical underpinings of the warrior-scholar. There is a long long tradition of this thought process, which predates most of the Korean martial arts as we know them today. It interesting but I remember being a young cho dan candidate and having some really mean arial techniques. Used on once for a knock out in a tournament. To day, i suspect I'd look like a pregnant yack trying to fly through the air. And yet, through my previous life as an LEO I have been down and dirty and know how to defend myself. Who is right? I don't know but I'll take my chances erring on the side of the normal person who needs some exercise and some skills. Most people will never have to fight but if I help protect one, then I've done my job as a sabum. You and Mike summed it up best in my mind. In closing - Masters West, Timmerman, Ji and Pak (as well as countless others who are by far my senior) could be by some standards to be considered infirm. One Master who hates to be called a Master and is one of the higest KHF yudanja in the states had heart disease (so I'm omitting the name). I don't think I'd dare get on their mat and tell them they are not strong enough to train with me. I think the results would be "interesting". I think that in judging any book by its cover we make a grave tactical mistake. Re: Physical fitness (Jye nigma) Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net In regard to: "While I'm thinking about it. I know some kung fu guys who say if a person is training in MA to get fit they need to join the local gym because MA is for combat. So different strokes for different folks I guess." Jye I heard one of my instructors tell a story about how a student had bragged about the number of push ups he could do. The instructor said something to the effect of : " Wow that's really good!! If someone attacks you from a dark alley, you can drop down and give him a hundred push-ups." Made an impression on me, I do go to the gym for strength and personal training. When the phone rings, its not for me. Not so in the studio. Happy New year to all.
