Thanks MS 3rd Dan WTF>>> All joking aside...straight up and serious for once. I've often thought about this. Honestly...I'm not fibbing. How horrible it would be...to put in all that work...and all those years...to finally reach the level of Master...and your last name is Bates. I just don't think I could bear it. I thought I would chime in on the size and shape thing with instructors and martial artists in general. I definitely qualify as someone who, at first glance, isn't your typically wiry young martial arts instructor. I'm 6'3" and my weight hangs right around 300 pounds. At 41, I have a bit of extra padding around the midsection. I actually do have a six pack (my instructor has sprained his wrist punching me in the stomach before :), it's just a big cooler :) Anyway, my physician used to get onto me about my weight until he watched me workout once. Then he finally told me that as long as I'm heart-healthy, he doesn't really care what my weight is if I can run circles around teenagers in class, especially when those teenagers participate in football, basketball and the like. As long as my checkups show good cholesterol levels, EKGs are fine, and all that, he's cool with it. Looks can be deceiving. I've learned how to do a front flip without a trampoline or vault (just a gym floor), and have done it many times. I don't so much anymore just because it's so hard on my knees, but physically, I can do it. One of my favorite lines before sparring a teenager, when they start backing away from me, is "Hey, I'm old and fat, how fast could I be?" :) I can almost do side and front splits and can easily kick a 6' tall person in the head with a round kick. I guess the jist of the email is, wait until you see the person do what they do. If it looks solid, leave them be. If someone (such as a potential student or parent of a potential student) has questions about your skills because of your size, show them what you're capable of. The old "Don't judge a book..." cliché, I suppose... *bows* - Bert Edens, II Dan TKD Springdale, Arkansas --__--__-- Message: 3 From: "J R Hilland" To: Date: Thu, 8 Jan 2009 15:03:03 -0600 Subject: [The_Dojang] RE: master instructor Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net <<>> I have seen kukki-taekwondo teenagers do that who are not even old enough for chodan. By this I mean all the 'behind the scenes' stuff going on inside the body. We may look at muscular people or even sumos and think wow they are in good shape, but that's only on the outside. I myself am more concerned with what's happening on the inside of me first and foremost. What good is having a great body and all that if I have high cholesterol? So to everyone on this list who may range from chubby to grossly obese, don't worry about the outside. The outside is only a manifestation of what's going on internally. Then in some cases, what's going on internally hasn't manifested itself quite yet. So focus on eating healthy, portion control, educating yourself on foods, etc. and everything will fall into place.>>> Complete annual diagnostic is the way to go. I do ultrasound on the carotids, blood work, electrocardiogram, visual, hearing, BMI, weight, etc. Establish the baseline, and see where you're getting better/worse every year. You have nothing without your health.
