This issue contains four articles that were commissioned and written on the topic of “Later Life in Flux: The Reality and Meaning of Getting Old.” The first article, by Ki-Soo Eun, reviews the aging of Korean society in terms of demographic transition, and explores the various social problems Korean society is facing as a result of this rapid aging and the ways in which society and families are grappling with the challenges. The second article, by Cheong-Seok Kim, addresses the patterns and changes of intergenerational relations among the elderly in Korea and discusses its implications in the context of rapid social transformation. The third article co-authored by Lee Dong-Ok, Cho Uhn, and Chang Pilwha deals with the experiences of older women who are transitioning from care giving to care receiving, representing the last phase of the gendered circuit of caring. Approaching the issue from a feminist perspective, this ethnography of the elderly reveals the perplexing position of Korean women in general and older women in particular. The fourth article, by Chung Gene-Woong, observes the “hang-out culture” created by a crowd of older men who regularly gather at Jongmyo park in downtown Seoul, and explores the older men’s sense of togetherness implicit in the culture as well as the stigmatizing gaze of mainstream media. This issue of the journal also features three articles, which were selected through rigorous peer review by the journal’s editors and guest reviewers, and one book review.
