I know things are tight for most right now, but hopefully folks can pitch-in and help out this worthy cause, the Bering Strait Tae Kwon Do Project (see bottom). Ray Terry thedojang@sbcglobal.net ==================== Begin forwarded message: Sent: Friday, March 06, 2009 12:06 PM Subject: ESKIMO NATIVE YOUTH STATE OF ALASKA HANMADANG MAY 1ST AND 2ND 2009 NEWS RELEASE: ALASKA STATE HANMADANG A CULTURAL FESTIVAL The Official State of Alaska Hanmadang has been moved to Nome Alaska this year May 1st and 2nd. The state of Alaska United States Tae Kwon Do Committee voted to award the state tournament to Nome due to the recent launch of the Bering Strait Tae Kwon Do Project. This project involves the Hanzhang University South Korea and Regional Master Dan Scholten in a joint project to supply University black belt instructors to the 15 Eskimo villages of the BSSD Bering Strait School District. After 14 years of research and teaching pilot programs in the villages Master Scholten has been able to document positive impact on remote native communities from traditional Tae Kwon Do Education both in school and after school. Over a 5 year period the project will establish a permanent indigenous teaching program to include scholarships and fellowship grants for native youth. The project will also support cultural exchange between the state of Alaska and Korea for traditional dance groups and athletes of World Hanmadang and NYO/ WEIO, Native Youth and World Eskimo Indian Olympics. A flyer, registration and events schedule will be available at Google Doc by March 15th. KOREAN CULTURAL EXCHANGE: The Alaska State Hanmadang hopes to celebrate the similarities of the two cultures by featuring participation of up to 300 Eskimo students from six villages with their Korean University instructors. Over 700 new students have started training in six villages with 5 new villages to be added in Fall 2009 with a total of 15 instructors rotating on a six month basis living in the villages volunteering in the schools full time, taking English classes, acting as Life Pier Role Models for students in Healthy Life Styles. Evenings and Weekends the Korean instructors teach traditional Tae Kwon Do for free. Traditional Tae Kwon Do has a profound impact on these communities which are 300% below the national low income poverty levels published by the federal government. These communities also have the highest rates of violence, alcohol, substance abuse, child abuse, and suicide in the nation. FUTURE OF NON PROFIT GRANTS FOR TKD The long term goal of the project is to provide a model for other rural and metropolitan school districts to implement their own non- profit Traditional TKD Academic programs. Due to the remote location of the villages with up to 40% of some communities participating, the project will be able to provide quantitative data related to academic testing levels and cost savings in health care and law enforcement issues. This data will be the base line information used by national research foundations to publish opinions and outlines for future implementation and grant funding for Alaska and other states in the future. USTC SANCTION AND SUPPORT: Master Scholten has been involved with teaching, doing research and grant writing for non-profit TKD programs for over 20 years. He has been trying to develop a method for covering an entire school district for rural Alaska 14 years. Master Scholten served as a referee for the World Hanmadang in 2008. The referee seminar and tournament found other like minded master’s who believed in traditional teaching dedicated to serve the community and disadvantage children. USTC board members helped with brokering a relationship with the Korean University that Master Scholten negotiated in Korea for a teaching grant November of 2008. The tournament hopes to have several USTC board members attend the tournament including the President Sang Lee. We also hope to have Governor Palin with state, national and international media coverage. DONATIONS NEEDED: This tournament is dedicated to help assist the non-profit teaching of Tae Kwon Do to underprivileged native youth of rural Alaska. The tournament will not have a registration or admission fee. We intend to supply medals for individuals and trophies for teams. Due to the remote locations of these villages and the cost of fuel over $11 per gallon it will cost over $114,000.00 to fly in 300 students from six villages. All donations are tax deductible. Anyone whishing to donate can please send checks to BSSD Bering Strait School District attention Mark Vink Business Manager P.O. Box 225 Unalakleet, Alaska 99684. It will cost an average of $380 per child to fly in for this tournament to Nome if you wanted to sponsor a specific child we could email a picture of the village and other information due to child protection laws and school district regulations I am not sure at this time about actual names and pictures of individuals but we have many photos on the school district website please go to www.bssd.org and go to Korean instructors. I would also appreciate any emails directly to me for assistance to masterdan@gci.net --__--__-- Message: 3 From: Hankido To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Sat, 07 Mar 2009 08:52:39 +0100 Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: TKD grannies Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > Ji Bok Yeon is an intimidating 75-year-old.
