Resler was diagnosed with macular degeneration at the age of 12 and began working with the Sight Center immediately to learn how to live with the loss of vision. "They teach all kinds of skills like how to ride the bus or label things with colors or dots so that you can function more independently and simply. You learn little things that you don't think about," she said. "For example, if someone asks you for the time late at night and you feel it isn't the safest situation for them to know you're blind, they teach you to just tell them you don't have a watch." One of the Sight Center's week-long programs helped Resler transition from high school to college at Ohio State University. When she returned from college, the center helped her find a job and learn to live independently. Computer classes helped her learn to use magnifying equipment and programs that help her read her computer screen and function more easily in the office. "I do everything like anybody else," she said. "I don't want to be slower because I have a visual impairment. I want to keep up with everybody and I think I've dispelled any myths that may exist about blind people." Resler has given back to the center by volunteering her time to teach self-defense classes and give safety talks. She began practicing the traditional Korean martial art of Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan nearly 12 years ago and now teaches classes to women, children and groups. "It's strictly martial arts but we teach self-defense as part of it," she said. "We take the practice and have developed a program using the ideas, the philosophy and the physical movements to teach classes." By practicing marital arts, Resler has improved her sense of safety and her physical awareness. Because of her visual impairment, she cannot see passers-by on the street but has found other ways to assess potentially dangerous situations. "When someone passes me on the street I couldn't say what they look like so I get an overall feel by how the person carries themselves if they're a threat," she said. "And even if they're not a threat, being comfortable in your own body and knowing that I don't have to see to be strong and confident and aware is just amazing. It's all about you feeling great and people know that and don't target you because they see that you're different." Resler grew up in a home with two visually impaired siblings and noted that while blindness is not the norm for most people, it always has been for her. "I was lucky because I was raised like being visually impaired or being blind is as perfect as anything else," she said. "Most people I've met haven't had that experience and I think they should and that's what they do at the Sight Center." --__--__-- Message: 2 From: Ray To: The_Dojang Date: Sat, 7 Mar 2009 19:58:07 -0800 Subject: [The_Dojang] training guns needed @ Jackson Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net For all those out there that will be attending the 30th International Hapkido Fiesta in a few days, if you'll be driving in and have training handguns (e.g. ASP Red guns, wooden blanks, metal cast handguns, etc) that you can bring with you, it would be greatly appreciated.
