The disbanding ceremony attracted 32 members of the 2008/09 Winter WTF Taekwondo Peace Corps, who were sent to several regions of eight countries for more than one month between Jan. 10, 2009 and March 5. The dispatched countries were Egypt, Morocco, Bolivia, Greece, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, China and Russia. One team was composed of four members. Also present at the event were Mr. Dai-soon Lee, a vice president of the WTF and chairman of the Taekwondo Promotion Foundation, and WTF Secretary General Jin Suk Yang. The Taekwondo Peace Corps is promoted by the WTF and organized by the GCS International, a U.N.-recognized nongovernmental organization with a special consultative status with the U.N. Economic and Social Council. It is also supported by the Taekwondo Promotion Foundation. The dispatch of the members of the 2008/09 Winter WTF Taekwondo Peace Corps was the second of its kind, after the WTF first sent 27 members of the 2008 Summer Taekwondo Peace Corps to seven regions of five countries during the summertime of 2008. The five countries were India, Paraguay, Pakistan, China and Russia, During the disbanding ceremony, each team made a presentation on their respective services. “The ongoing WTF Taekwondo Peace Corps project serves as a good tool for the education of the young around the world,” said Mr. Dai-soon Lee, a vice president of the WTF in his congratulatory speech at the ceremony. “In this regard, the Taekwondo Peace Corps project should be expanded to involve as many countries as possible.” Given the growing popularity of the WTF Taekwondo Peace Corps, the WTF will dispatch members to more countries this coming summer. “We plan to accept applications for the 2009 Summer WTF Taekwondo Peace Corps for one month starting from April 1, 2009.” Shortly after taking the helm of the WTF in June 2004, WTF President Chungwon Choue promised to launch the Taekwondo Peace Corps, as part of its solidarity programs, thus helping enhance the image of taekwondo and the WTF. --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Tue, 17 Mar 2009 18:33:24 -0700 From: The_Dojang To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Poomsae Referee Certification Course Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Poomsae Referee Certification Course to be Held at Kissimmee Qualifier USA Taekwondo is pleased to announce an eight-hour Level I Poomsae Referee Certification course to be held on Friday, April 3, in conjunction with the April 4-5 National Qualifier in Kissimmee, Fla. Then there are those that truly understand that hapkido is a complex art and that it takes decades just to grasp the intricacies of the countless techniques and a life time to master. You are either part of the problem with the way hapkido is practiced, taught and perceived, or part of the solution. Fortunately, we had the 30th international hapkido and KMA clinic in MS last weekend. It is the event that started it all as part of the solution. Hosted by GM J.R. West, hapkido 9th dan and VP kidohwe American branch. Out of town instructors included: Master Holcombe Thomas, (KHF), GM Hilderbrand (TKD), Master Dennis McHenry (TSD), Master Ray Terry (Sinmoo), Master Mike Reed (HKD), Master Joe Borucki (HKD), Master Larry Smith (HKD), Master Don Kirsch (HKD), Master Anthony New (HKD), Mr. Michael Munyon (TKD), and yours truly. Hapkido is an intricate art requiring a great deal of dedication and requires the commitment to study whenever the opportunity arises with others in the art. This workshop continues to be the best avenue for anyone who practices, teaches or is even interested in the art of hapkido. As always, I learned some new techniques, was reminded of old ones I had forgotten, learned some variations of some classic hapkido techniques and had a great time. It just goes to prove that even after all this time; you can easily still learn something new if you put the effort into it. A special thank to my teacher GM West for all the hard work and effort he puts into this event and having the patients and ability to put up with all of us after all these years. Jere R. It is 936 pages, hardback and letter size pages, just like all his other books. He states in the introduction that the book has 2 major sections. One is the history of Korea and Japan. The other the history of hapkido. He felt that without knowledge of the history of Korea and Japan, one would not fully understand the history of hapkido. As many of you know Dr. Kimm He-Young was one of the very first to bring hapkido to the US. He is also a senior advisor and the director of the international division for the Daehan Kidohwe. One of his PhD's is in history, so the book is a natural evolution of his KMA series. I have discussed this book with him over the years and I know he has been working on this particular book for a very long time. The historical photographs are alone worth the price of the book but the obviously large section on Choi Young Sul's life is full of events that previously were never known by most of us. The section that had the interviews with the son of the founder of aikido who discussed his father's recollection of Choi Young Sul is rather fascinating. The list of people that Dr. Kimm interviewed is the who's who of the hapkido world. Around 50 folks including Choi Young Sul. Part 5 is titled 'hapkido associations'. Anyone who has been around hapkido for any length of time is associated with the Kidohwe, KHF or ITF in one way or another. The book included the gup/dan testing requirements from different time periods for these organizations. Many of us remember back before other hapkido organizations existed in Korea and subsequently when other organizations were then allowed and that the abuse of hapkido dan rank became an immediate concern, and still is. But you will find a section with Choi Young Sul discussing the abuse of hapkido dan rank during his lifetime in Korea, so at least we know it is not something new. Overall, from what I have read so far, our current understanding of the history of hapkido has a lot of blanks and even many errors, I have only read a few hundred pages and have a LOT more to read, but this book really fills in the blanks and changes a lot of misconceptions about the history of hapkido and I am glad I got it.
