Fred. Mas Oyama never learnt TKD.. Gen Choi tried to convert him (due to his korean roots and growing fame) but failed.. see below for more > From: Ray I assume in his mind it made more > sense to stay in the country that he knew best at that time and that > was Japan. Mas Oyama was mentioned in Gen Choi's biography as Gen choi wanted him to chnage to TKD due to his Korean roots. In short Mas Oyamas response was that he woudnt because, despite the occupation he felt his 'Japanese Family' treated him well and it would dishonour them to revert back - so he kept his name and 'new' Japanaese adopted hertitage. Dont quote me on that as I havnt got the book in frnt of me, but thats how I remember it. That said, Mas Oyama was a fantastic martial artists IMO, one I hold in very high regards. > From: "Curt McCauley" I believe the stories of killing the bull are true. However there seem to be a lot of conflicting stories about him. --- His bull killing has courted a lot of controversay as many have said that the bull was very weak to begin with, but whether that was true or not, I dont think Mas needs it as publicity anymore.. he was great as he was and I think that was a 'sort of' publicity stunt to popularise his karate. Clips of it can be found on youtube btw.. so everyone can make their own minds up. Stuart -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter. We are a community of 6 million users fighting spam. Mr. McCauley, Out of curiosity, where did you hear that Mas Oyama studied Moo Duk Kwan? Did he receive any sort of rank by Hwang Kee? If so, what was it? I do know that he studied Shotokan for a couple of years with Funakoshi and then Japanese Goju Ryu for several more years (and received, I think, 8th dan from Gogen Yamaguchi). Oyama also studied Daito Ryu under Yoshida Kotoro (who was also Katsuyuki Kondo's teacher for a while). Haven't heard anything about Moo Duk Kwan, though. Any information would be appreciated! Thanks. In the movie, he retains his Korean name, and the story is a bit exaggerated, but still... it's a really good movie. Our house is a block from the Sheyenne River and the levee continues to hold. Our property did flood Monday due to ice jams, although the outbuildings flooded, the house is still dry. Now the storage sheds, and everything in them are ice locked. It has been a long week and we still have a very long way to go. The way everyone in each city, town and community has been pulling together is just amazing. Thank you to our KMA family who have been checking up on us or are concerned. Jere R.
