Are we, the martial arts community an anachronism? I almost feel, sometimes, like the last samurai. You see some kid do wonders and you feel gratified, or you have a student who saves themselves, a family member or someone else - but then you read this crap day after day and you can't help but wonder, am I doing any good or am I making them more efficient. Frank<< While the above is somewhat disturbing to contemplate, I think it's good to do so periodically as martial artists. I know it's very popular to say that MA training is for everyone but, IMNSHO, it is not. Back in the day you heard about instructors putting students to the test before they were accepted. They had to prove that they were worthy to be students in the first place. MA trianing *can* have a very beneficial impact on people, but this isn't a foregone conclusion. Maybe it's time for people to start seeing if the students they accept have at least an interest in the self-improvement aspect of MA training. The question of how one would do that in a modern milieu is one that I think could be discussed somewhat fruitfully. I will only say that when I read Dave Lowry's description in _Autumn Lightning_ of him trying to be accepted as a student in the Yagyu Shinkage Ryu I see no reason why something similar couldn't be done on a wider scale. He went to his instructor's house three times a week to ask to be accepted as student for several weeks before even getting invited in. I know this approach wouldn't work for everyone, especially instructors whose students are largely children (and I'm not knocking anyone earning a living teaching MA's; I wish I was doing so) but perhaps if potential students are in their teens or adults something akin to this could be implemented or, at the very least, an interview or two of the potential student. Regardless of when the student began training (age wise) I think it's the instructor's responsibility to periodically evaluate their behavior and attitude. I see nothing wrong at all with booting a student from a school either temporarily or permanently if they have a bad attitude. An instructor friend of mine did just that recently with one of her students who was caught stealing. Maybe he could've learned integrity and honesty if he had been allowed to stay, but he's already been at the school for years and obvious the lesson wasn't getting home. Maybe now he has something to think about. As for the question of whether or not we as a people are going mad. Let's just say that I think the answer to *that* particular question is nearly self-evident. Chris, I strongly agree with your statement. One of the things I tell them up front is that this is not seasonal like soccer, football or t-ball. That it requires commitment, dedication, and effort from students and parents alike. In fact here's what i have on a sign by the door: Note to Parents: "If you view Tang Soo Do training as just another activity like soccer, t-ball and gymnastics, our school may not be for you. "The karate programs offered at other schools are very good and may be more convenient for your needs." "Team Choson is only interested in students and families who are dedicated to making a positive change in their life through the tremendous benefits our school offers." "We assume that every member has a long term goal of achieving a black belt... and beyond. " Sincerely, Team Choson Management     I think I got that the idea a long time ago from someone on one of the forums I participated. So let me ask what would be some of the questions you would put together for an initial interview or how would you conduct the interview process. I've heard similar stories, and it always shocks people when I'm not amazed that so and so turned out to be a serial killer. I guess I have a low opinion of humanity in general, probably because of my training as a historian. Perhaps one can't read about assassinations, the Holocaust, and war without becoming cynical in that way. The good news, of course, is that being a parent also makes one hopeful and probably a lot more loving. Maybe that's how the world balances itself out.
