Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net To the List, A big "Thank You" to those who have helped in Dr. Moser's BB/leadership study. Both he and I appreciate your participation. For better statistical analysis, he does need more BB's from any martial art. Below is his 'invitation' letter and purpose statement. The questionnaire really only takes a couple of minutes to complete. If you haven't 'clicked' through it yet, won't you please help? Yes, we love our KMA's, but IMVHO it is important to share the non-combat benefits of the arts with the world. Bringing those benefits into the academic spotlight can only help. We 'preach to the choir' here on the DD. Let's help spread the word. If you have already done the questionnaire, please forward this to your BB friends regardless of style. Respectfully, pil seung, Don Ross Dear Black Belt Holder: First, please allow me to introduce myself to you. I began training in Tae Kwon Do six years ago at the age of 44 and currently hold a rank of 1^st Dan. In addition to having a passion for the martial arts, I have also studied, taught, and researched leadership topics throughout my professional career and I currently work as a faculty member at a university located in Northwest Ohio. The purpose of this message is to respectfully request your participation in a research study that will investigate the relationship between ‘emotional intelligence/leadership’ and those individuals who have achieved the rank of Black Belt in the martial arts. It is my hope that the findings of this research study will support the premise that participation in the martial arts helps individuals acquire the necessary skills to be more sussessful in their personal and professional life. Recent studies have shown that, although analytical and technical skills may serve as a minimum requirement for leadership success, it is ‘emotional intelligence’ that is often the attribute that distinguishes outstanding performers from average performers. Emotional intelligence can be described as a combination of self management and relationship skills (i.e. impulse control, empathy, emotional self awareness, etc.). I have found that the skills/attributes that determine an individual’s emotional intelligence are very similar to the qualities, characteristics, and tenets that are taught and reinforced in the martial arts. This study will determine if Black Belt holders possess higher levels of emotional intelligence than that found among the general population. In addition, the emotional intelligence aggregated scores of Black Belt holders will be compared to those scores of highly effective/successful leaders in other disciplines as identified through research studies conducted on this topic. If such a correlation exists between Black Belt holders and highly effective/successful leaders, then these findings will support the development of a new leadership development model or framework based on the practices, philosophies and approaches traditionally found in the martial arts. Finally, it is my desire to submit the findings of this research study for publication in selected leadership and martial arts journals. The participants taking part in this study will be individuals holding a rank of 1^st degree Black Belt or higher and who are at least 21 years of age or older. If you meet these requirements and would like to participate in this study, you will be asked to complete an online demographic/leadership competencies survey consisting of 20 questions. At the conclusion of the demographic/leadership competencies survey, you will be provided with a link that will direct you to an online Bar-On EQ-i Assessment. Completing the demographic/leadership competencies survey and online Bar-On EQ-i Assessment should take no more than 20 – 25 minutes. To participate in this worthwhile study, simply email me at moser@findlay.edu and I will respond by emailing you a link to the online demographic/leadership survey and Bar-On EQ-i Assessment. Again, thank you in advance for your participation in this research study. Please feel free to email me at moser@findlay.edu if you should have any comments or questions regarding this research study. Respectfully, Dr. Chris A.
