I only know a few MA schools that use contracts that I'd not refer to as belt mills. My instructor runs a pretty successful school - ~125 students, class four days a week, in business for 40 years next year - and has never used contracts. But what seems to make sense to me is that the issue of contracts as a business decision is orthogonal to the issue of quality of instruction. Assuming the contract is used in good faith. However, if a school is using a contract, it's a contract, just like any other, and nobody should enter a contract without assuring to themselves that they can meet the requirements of the contract. Most good faith contracts have reasonable 'outs', but neither should someone be allowed out of contract for simple lack of interest n following through On May 17, 2009, at 6:22 PM, Christopher Spiller wrote: >> Every successful martial arts school I have ever seen or >> heard of uses contracts. >> >> >> >> >> fred > > Interesting. When you join the YMCA you have to buy a year membership or more...uhh..contract...when you get a credit card...uhhh...contract...when you finance a car..furniture...house...almost anything involving financing you sign a contract....BUT for some reason people think when it comes to Martial Arts they shouldn't work with a contract???? Isn't it a commercial service like all the others you use and sign for in your daily life??? I don't understand why people will put their John Hancock on almost every other contract but when it comes to martial arts it is some big problem??? If you want to workout at Golds Gym you either pay up front for the whole time period OR sign a contract??? Come on folks if you value your martial arts training and want to keep working out then why would you NOT sign a contract????? This stuff sounds quite ridiculous to me.....also..the story about Victory Martial Arts...I live in the east central Florida area...I know nothing about Victory Martial Arts except for their rather cheesy commercials I see on my TV sometimes..BUT...if you think the cost is too much..which IMHO it sounds like it is...then go somewhere else and don't sign the contract...I will also say that after reading the rather long post on why different people were quiting and trying to get out of their contracts that some of the reasons sounded like the people just didn't want to work out anymore and were using their doctor as an excuse...but that's just my opinion.... I would state that the best hapkido instructors I know that have their own dojang do not have contracts. That is also true for instructors in tangsoodo dojang and taekwondo dojang. Jere R.
