On June 30, 1960 (I was still in high school)"Using ancient Korean martial arts name, incorporated and registered with the government under the name of Korean Soo Bahk Do Association. Moo Duk Kwan becomes the first member of association. The idea of the name "Soo Bahk Do" or "Hand Strike Way", came from terms used in the Moo Yei Do Bo Ton Ji, "Soo Bahk Ki" (hand strike technique) and "Soo Bahk Hi" (hand strike dance) June of 1962, he "reregistered Korean Soo Bahk Do Association due to ruling of new government." May of 1965 "Korean Soo Bahk Do Asssociation's legal status revoked" June of 1966 "Supreme Court rules in favor of Korean Soo Bahk Do Association" According to the book he first used the name "Hwa Soo Do" (flower hand way), then changed to "Tang Soo Do" in 1947, after speaking with Mister Chun San Sup (Founder of Yeon Moo Kwan, forerunner to Ji Do Kwan) and Mister Lee Won Kuk, (Founder of Chung Do Kwan). Apparently one called his art Kong Soo Do and the other Tang Soo Do. Apparently these two terms were the only ones recognizable as a karate type martial art, in the Korean language at that time. Then he began using the term "Soo Bahk Do". "Moo Duk Kwan" has been used since his first studio opened in 1945. Thusly, (and I am guessing) "Soo Bahk Do" must have influenced the teachings of Hwang Kee, Kwan Jang Nim to members of the Moo Duk Kwan since the early 60's. However it was the mid to late 80's that I began to become aware of the "Soo Bahk Do" term and experience the techniques and Hyungs that have come from the influence of the Moo Yei Do Bo Tong Ji. I hope this helps. respectfully submitted, Curt McCauley Channel Town Soo Bahk Do --__--__-- Message: 2 From: James O'Connor To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Sun, 31 May 2009 10:47:29 -0600 Subject: [The_Dojang] Local MA groups? Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Kinda a strange question maybe but I'm wondering if there are any 'local' martial arts mailing lists or groups in Colorado. Not like schools, we all train in schools, but local organizations of people who communicate and share ideas and such. So I thought I'd ask around and look around. I think my ultimate goal is to get information on places to train and people to train with outside of normal class time. For example, I cross-train in BJJ but that's hard to practice outside of class to get more reps in, etc.. at home, so it'd be cool to have a place or people to train when the schools closed Thanks, Jay --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang Subscribe or Unsubscribe: http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2009: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
