Not that it helps you in Colorado but I started such a group (http://www.meetup.com/martialartists/) here in Dallas. There were other groups around at the time but they were always specific to a school, serving as promotional events. My group is not. Initially the group was to help new people ease into martial arts by having a safe place to ask questions without sales pressure and to compare the different styles. It turned out though that mostly advanced black belts show up, many with their own schools. It's become a chance for the experts to mix it up on the mats trying one style against the other. And for the experts to become students again, learning new material from others. It seems that several of those who run schools, being at the top of their local community, have limited opportunities to go up against those of equal or better skill. Being a low-level 4th non-black belt myself, I appreciate the exposure to material outside my skill level and the experts taking time to offer advice to those below them. We sometimes have themes, such as balance or falls or knife defense, even modern bodyguarding. Several members are also into historical recreation so we get lessons in armored combat as well. We tend to spend about 3-4 hours on the mat with people reluctant to leave. ;-) It was a challenge finding a night on which to meet, since as I said many of the attendees run their own schools on weeknights. Perhaps you could start such a group in your area? -Jeff --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang Subscribe or Unsubscribe: http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2009: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
