The event is anticipated to attract thousands of participants to the Jeonbuk province, which boasts stunning natural environments, varied cultural assets and friendly citizens. The Expo is a chance for practitioners from around the globe to converge in the home of Taekwondo and share their cultures and practices amongst each other. They will also have the chance to understand more about Korean culture and traditions which will enhance their understanding of Korea’s national and Olympic designated sport. Muju is the site of the World Taekwondo Park which is to be completed and opened by 2013. The Cultural Expo will be a chance to support this major new facility when it is unveiled and will be a chance to promote all the major facilities that the new park will offer. The Expo is ready to amaze guests with an opening ceremony followed by a full program of events to include taekwondo performances and demos, technical seminars, competitions and cultural events to keep attendees captivated throughout. Also by nationality if that is available. I know the Kukkiwon used to publish this info for their own, but apparently no longer does so. I attach a link where part of this information is displayed for the Kukkiwon. Assuming this is accurate, and if you run the numbers, only 6 percent of all dan holders and 15 percent of those 4th dan or above are from outside Korea. I think I remember reading once that there were 22,000 KKW 5th dans worldwide, of which only 2,000 were outside Korea and only 700 in the US. I would also be interested in knowing how many members each of the three ITFs have. If anyone can steer me toward some data, I would be grateful. I am not affiliated with the UBBT, but I know a couple of fellow instructors who participate in it. This program is the brain child of Tom Callos, who always seems to be pushing the envelope of how black belts are perceived and what they should be capable of. I probably won't do justice to what he promotes, but basically he believes a black belt should be more than just someone who has good physical martial arts skills. They should be someone who is trying to make a difference in their community and around the world. For example, a recent UBBT program listed among its requirements: The Anger Management Education Course The 1000 Community Projects PROJECT The NO Quitting Requirement Diabetes Education Course 15 Minutes of Daily Meditation Weekly On-Line UBBT Journal Entries 1000 Acts of Kindness Achieving and Documenting 10 Personal Victories 50,000 Acts of Kindness through Students and Community Right 3 Wrongs Mend 3 Relationships Gone Bad Environmental Clean Up Project The full list for this particular test is at: http://ultimateblackbelttest.wordpress.com/the-ubbt-curriculum/ I really like where he's going with this, as I believe an instructor / black belt SHOULD be much more than just someone with good physical skills in the martial arts. *bows* - Bert Edens, II Dan TKD Butcher's Martial Arts --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang Subscribe or Unsubscribe: http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2009: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
