I have two students moving at the end of the month and want to continue their training. I currently teach a blended-style TKD using the ITF forms, but my students are new (they've been training four months), young (both under 13), and motivated (they both excel in class and practice on their own outside of class), so I'm sure they'll adapt to any school quickly as long as it's a quality program. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I must respectfully disagree with those that say we shouldn't give moral and civic lessons. Martial arts are rich with budo and code of hwa rang do. If we fail to teach this we become another gym. Gyms are great, in fact I belong to Bally's myself. Our kids need moral lessons and lessons in civic obligation. Any dope can tell it like it is...martial arts teaches the way it ought to be! We do this by being a living example not only to our students, but, to the public as well. This is one of the positive things that sets us apart from the rest of the world. Martial arts is our way of life. I could say much more on this subject, I think everyone in this forum gets my point. A spokesman for the US Embassy, Michael Turner, confirmed the death of the 72-year-old actor. He says Carradine died either late Wednesday or early Thursday, but he could not provide further details out of consideration for his family. The Web site of the newspaper The Nation cited unidentified police sources as saying Carradine was found Thursday hanged in his luxury hotel room and is believed to have committed suicide. Carradine was a leading member of a venerable Hollywood acting family that included his father, character actor John Carradine, and brother Keith. -- AP --__--__-- Message: 8 From: "Donald" To: "dojang_digest" Date: Thu, 4 Jun 2009 11:01:14 -0400 Subject: [The_Dojang] UBBT Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Mr. Walker, Sir, I am having some difficulty understanding your concern re the addition of philosophy, ie. the "Do" to the fighting component of a martial art. My understanding has always been that the philosophy and responsibility of a MA is what separates us as martial artists from brawlers. Shaolin, Hwrang, Bushi, European knighthood, and probably other martial art cultures I'm not conversant with, all have some philosophical underpinnings. I do agree with you that these 'acts of kindness', etc. should be part of our daily lives regardless of our involvement in the MA, but sadly, modern culture has promoted the 'Me', and 'devil-take-the-hindmost' philosophy. You wrote, " Martial arts is an element in my life, it is not my entire life." Fair enough, but if the martial art you study is not influencing your life outside the dojang, then you are missing more than you are learning. I do not know your martial art bio or history. IMVHO, I've found that time [years], has enabled me to refine the physical techniques, and assimilate the mental/philosophical aspects into my life in AND out of the dojang. The mere physical techniques for dan rank can be taught relatively easily, so why do you think there are time-in-rank requirements that span years? No disrespect intended or implied, Sir. Wishing you success on your MA journey. pil seung, Don Ross "When young, teach with the body; when old, teach with words; when gone, teach by moral precept." -- Gen.
