Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hi Everybody, I know this isn't the place for this and I'm sorry, but I have a friend who's working on her PhD in linguistics and needs speakers of Korean as a second language, and they're not easy to find. If you're in the Chicago area, speak Korean, and have some time, please help my friend Midam out: Hello my friends, How are you these days? I hope everybody's doing fine for everything. Do you know anybody who's a native English speaker and speakers Korean as a foreign language? I'm planning a linguistics experiment for my dissertation and desperately need help from people who are native speakers of English and speak Korean as their foreign language. I will pay $10 per hour for my gratitude. If you are interested or if you know anybody who's interested, please let me know. I can tell you more about the experiment, such as what it is like, how long it takes, and where you can come for the experiment, etc. You can simply reply to this message or email me to midamkim@gmail.com. Thank you very much! Thanks so much, Midam. -------------------- To reply to this message, follow the link below: http://www.facebook.com/n/?inbox/readmessage.php&t=1015168277465&mid=903c47G3e252ae6G894bc0G0 --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Thu, 4 Jun 2009 19:39:32 -0700 (PDT) From: Jye nigma Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] DPRK on Google Earth To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net wow....good accomplishment made by that guy.   Jye --- On Thu, 6/4/09, Ray wrote: From: Ray Subject: [The_Dojang] DPRK on Google Earth To: "The_Dojang" Date: Thursday, June 4, 2009, 4:34 PM http://gizmodo.com/5277184/north-korea-secrets-uncovered-in-google-earth-by-a mateur-spies _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list, 2,500 members The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net Copyright 1994-2009: Ray Terry and Martial Arts Resource Standard disclaimers apply Subscribe or Unsubscribe: http://the-dojang.net --__--__-- Message: 3 Subject: RE: [The_Dojang] Re: Martial arts an "ism"? If I can I'd like to share an issue that we seem to have in the UK. Our kids don't seem able to tell what is right or wrong anymore. Nobody seems to want to take that responsibility, least of all some parents. So schools and teachers are given programs to promote good citizenship. As someone mentioned already there is an honourable indeed noble tradition among many martial arts to promote the higher nature of each human being. I think we should raises our own standards if needs be, then lead by example. I must respectfully disagree with those that say we shouldn't give moral and civic lessons. Martial arts are rich with budo and code of hwa rang do. If we fail to teach this we become another gym. Gyms are great, in fact I belong to Bally's myself. Our kids need moral lessons and lessons in civic obligation. Any dope can tell it like it is...martial arts teaches the way it ought to be! So schools and teachers are given programs to promote good citizenship.“ Does this scare the crap outta anyone? Two reasons, to echo Mr Smith's comments, we live in a “not me – not my fault” times. And the government is basically teaching morals due to the vacancies/deficiencies left by the parents. With that said, I sincerely appreciate those teachers that are good examples for their students but still unhappy with the thought of government teaching morals, character development, etc. Off topic a bit. When I hear people say “public education” – I will typically say “government education” because that’s what it is. Our government dictates what our children learn. Couple that with parents refusing to be parents leaving the need for someone to fill the role. So the school system (aka government) fills that role. When you consider most of us have our children spend more time in the government school longer than with us, it basically boils down to the government being the surrogate parent. Think about those little yellow government buses carting our children off to government school. And if they don’t go, parent goes to jail OR reports their curriculum for government approval. While I don’t like the system, for our particular situation, it’s better than home schooling. No beef with home schooling - my sister seemed to have very good success at it with her children. Back to martial arts, I’m cautious anytime I see a parent check off the “needs discipline” box. If they are simply looking for reinforcement – great! If they are looking for us to fix what they’ve screwed up over the past 6-12 years...keep driving. We had a father come into our school that absolutely refused to hold his child responsible and, in effect, let the child make (poor) parental decisions. If I was a betting man, barring a miracle, I’d put money on that child growing up and relying on the government (our tax dollars) for support either through premature social security, welfare, or prison. At our school, we teach/instill more than just self defense and fighting skills. However, not to the extent that we’re taking on parental roles. Support and reinforcement - sure. Date: Fri, 5 Jun 2009 16:37:31 +0000 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Just let me say that I AM a public education High School teacher and although many like to complain about the "public education system", most of them actually went to public school and are now successful in their businesses and would rather complain about the system and whine about paying taxes...it was ok when they were in public school and getting their education but now that they are adults and successfull it is all bad??? I hear this bunk all the time. The funny thing is that most people are basing their opinion on the subject from watching the news and seeing two or three "bad" kids around their business or neighborhood, the majority of complainers have never been around a public school since they graduated. I have been teaching and coaching in the public school system in the state of Florida now for 21 straight years...so I would venture to say I know more about how teenagers are these days than anyone on this message board...basically the kids I am around in class, coaching football, wrestling, and weightlifting, plus the ones I have in my Hapkido class are exactly the way we were when we were younger...sure they dress different, talk different, and watch and play with different devices and toys...but when you get to know them the MAJORITY of them are good kids waiting to be steered in the right direction..sure there are some knuckleheads and criminals that you can't reach...and there always will be...BUT..that is not the majority or the rule of thumb. When it comes to "education", let me say that I teach in a specialized computer technology program that "I" help create back in 1996, it was the first of it's kind in Florida and we teach computer graphics, cisco networking, programming, tv-production, along with all the core subjects being mixed in using advanced technology. I would love to see a home school, religious school, or any charter school do the same...and yes it is "public education"...so IMHO before everyone starts being a critic go ahead and volunteer in a public school and "see" what is going on first and then form your opinion...NO it's not perfect and there are problems but as my old Korean war Marine dad used to tell me "son you are either a talker or a doer, which one are you gonna be?",,,,now I'll get off my sermon Michael Tomlinson _________________________________________________________________ Hotmail® has ever-growing storage!
