But competitors are still in town hard at work trying to rack up points toward future competitions. According to Jenny O'Connor from the ATA, if Little Rock's state convention center is the Mecca of the taekwondo world, then those who made it here are some of the best in their belt ranks. "They are winning; you'll see a lot of trophies around here. These students worked very hard to be here," said O'Connor Rhea So brought her son Christian to the competition for the first time this year. She says before leaving her Massachusetts home for the tournament, Christian had a clear plan-compete hard and take home as many trophies as possible. So said he's been doing just that. "He won first place in weapon," said So. "And he won first place in form and now he said he's going to get this one too." Win or lose coming out of Friday's championships, competitors woke up to a new season and a clean slate on Saturday. For many, that meant another chance to start earning points toward the 2010 championships "It feels fun, it's just really fun," said lily Magee from Benton, AR. Quentin Windom from little rock said the tournament was a learning opportunity. "I've been practicing hard for this and I've been trying to get better to become a black belt." Like many of the competitors at the tournament, Zachary Mercurio from Missouri came with his own cheering squad for moral support. "He's done well today. He's taken one 2nd and two 3rds so far so he's having a good day" said Zachary's mother, Holie Mercurio. Other parents like J.D. Barnes' also stood close to the competition ring adding up each point their children made so that they could stay on top of how well they were doing. "his goal is to make state champs and this is a good way to get him started on those points," Explained Patricia Barnes. Saturday's competitions were for ages 3 through 16. The older competitors will take their turn on Sunday- the last day of this year's tournament. The championships marked the 19th year the American Taekwondo Association World has held the world championship tournaments in Little Rock. Competitors came to from nearly 17 countries and across the United States. Twenty central Arkansans competed for titles this year. --__--__-- Message: 2 From: Ray To: The_Dojang Date: Mon, 29 Jun 2009 07:58:19 -0700 Subject: [The_Dojang] Use of Electronic Protectors Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Use of Electronic Protectors at 2009 WTF World Taekwondo Championships 29 Jun 2009 Presidents and Secretaries General WTF Member National Associations Re: Use of Electronic Protectors at 2009 WTF World Taekwondo Championships Dear Colleagues, I would like to take this opportunity to appreciate your continued devotion to the promotion and development of taekwondo throughout the world. It is widely believed that the future of taekwondo is bright as it not only gives hopes and educational values to its practitioners but also interests the spectators and TV viewers with more excitement and fair judgment in taekwondo competition. As a responsible organization for development and improvement of the sport of taekwondo, World Taekwondo Federation has finally decided to use Electronic Protectors at the upcoming 2009 WTF World Taekwondo Championships Copenhagen scheduled for October 14-18, 2009, following the recommendation by the Ad-Hoc Committee on Electronic Protectors, which unanimously proposed, at its meeting in Baku on June 12, 2009, the use of the electronic protectors at the World Championships in Copenhagen. Although there are rooms to be improved, electronic protector produced by LaJust proved at the 2009 WTF World Cup Taekwondo Team Championships and 1st WTF World Para-Taekwondo Championships held in Baku, Azerbaijan on June 10-14, 2009 that it could make taekwondo competitions much fairer by minimizing personal errors, in conjunction with the newly-adopted instant video replay system. Concern over the use of electronic protectors from national teams who were not familiar with the system were substantially reduced since most of the top ranking teams at the World Cup Team Championships in Baku did not have the experience of using LaJust electronic protectors at their own major competitions such as Continental Taekwondo Championships. We are sorry for the delayed announcement on the use of electronic protectors with such a short notice before the World Championships in Copenhagen. We hope you to understand, however, that we have always worked hard to go on the right way to excellence as well as fairness in our sport. I extend my sincere gratitude to all our member national associations for their cooperation. Sincerely yours, Jin Suk Yang Secretary General Cc: WTF Council Members and Auditors Presidents and Secretaries General of WTF Continental Unions --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang Subscribe or Unsubscribe: http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2009: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
