Golf and rugby sevens have been recommended for inclusion in the 2016 Olympics by the IOC. But where does this leave the other five sports that missed out? http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/othersports/olympics/6022354/Olympics-2016-where-now-for-sports-discarded-by-IOC.html By Rod Gilmour 13 Aug 2009 ... Karate It may be the most popular of the martial arts but poor lobbying looks to have accounted for a sport that claims to have 100 million competitors. The Olympics already has judo and taekwondo and it may take another competitor to kick a referee in the face - as happened in Beijing - before the latter is axed and karate gets its chance again. Along with squash, karate narrowly missed out on IOC's controversial two-thirds majority vote in 2005. Administrators will now have to work hard on differentiating the sport from judo and taekwondo. ... --__--__-- Message: 2 From: Ray To: The_Dojang Date: Thu, 13 Aug 2009 16:18:33 -0700 Subject: [The_Dojang] from The Korea Times Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Textbooks Contain Anti-Human Rights Content By Kim Rahn Korea Times Staff Reporter 08-13-2009 http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/nation/2009/08/117_50091.html School textbooks contain descriptions and illustrations running counter to human rights, according to the National Human Rights Commission. For example, a middle school textbook suggests, in regards to bullying by classmates, that bullied students need to determine why he or she became a target of bullying. "It seems like bullied students have to blame themselves. The description may force them to think that being bullied is his or her own problems," one of the monitors said. The case is among 60 examples of anti-human rights content in middle and high school textbooks disclosed by the commission, Thursday. The cases were found by 50 students who monitored textbooks. "The students mainly pointed out examples of sexual discrimination, stereotyped gender roles and disregard for juvenile culture. Many of the descriptions would be passed over by adults," a commission official said. Another case, found in a high school ethics textbook, described teenagers' cultural activities as "not productive but consumptive." "The textbook describes teenage culture as if it is passive and dependent on popular culture. It ignores students' potential to develop creative culture," another member said. On "Attire matching my social position," the monitors pointed out that suggesting that students should change their attire according to their "position as students" reflects the viewpoint of adults and ignores individuality. Gender discrimination was also pointed out. In the illustrations of middle school physical education textbooks, boys are shown playing football, skiing and doing taekwondo, while girls are shown dancing. Another textbook shows a woman wearing a fur coat as an example of extravagance without providing an example of a male exhibiting corresponding behavior. The students also said that a middle school ethics textbook showed only girls engaged in volunteer activities. Regarding a taekwondo-related illustration in which only Korean men appear, a student suggested foreign men and women be included to incorporate a more multicultural approach. The students will give more opinions to the commission by the end of the year, and the commission will submit a recommendation for revision of the textbooks to the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. It will select another group of students next February. --__--__-- Message: 3 From: bernard redfield To: Date: Fri, 14 Aug 2009 10:24:16 -0400 Subject: [The_Dojang] Hapkido Organizations Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hello all, I have not posted in some time. Just to lay some background for you, I have for the last three years been building my Dojang up, I opened in Garner NC and have close to 100 members now. I am a 4th Dan in Tang Soo Do Mi Guk Kwan, and a 3rd Dan in the World Traditional Hapkido Fed. though I have not been with WTHF in quite a while now. I am interested in offering Hapkido to a select few, and was wondering which organizations you would recommend as being quality. I was taught system that was a traditional old Choi Young Sool with not tons of techniques not like I believe to be the "modern" Hapkido, if you understand what I mean? and would like to find a similar, but I am open to your suggestions, as I have found this board to be knowladgable on HKD. So any help would be welcome. Florida was the first State to codify the 'Castle Doctrine', not a "Wild West statute". A majority of the States have followed. Basically, the 'Castle Doctrine' says that if you are attacked and put in fear of your life or serious bodily injury to yourself or those under your protection, in any location where you can legally be, [including your vehicle here in South Carolina] you have the legal RIGHT to use force to defend yourself and others up to and INCLUDING lethal force. I would submit that throwing your arms up and begging your attacker, for real, or in jest as Mr. McTague implies, "Oh my God! Please don't kill me!" will merely embolden the attacker - after all, you are playing HIS script as a sheep. In our lawsuit laden society, it is nearly a certainty you will be sued anyway after successfully defending yourself, with or without MA training. The odds are pretty good that you are not the first 'victim' for your attacker - he EXPECTS you to play the sheep . A sheep-dog/defender does not play a sheep. A simple "His verbal threats and physical attack put me in fear for my life" meets the legal burden. Once again, Mr. McTague, no disrespect implied nor intended, simply my perspective. pil seung, Don Ross "When young, teach with the body; when old, teach with words; when gone, teach by moral precept." -- Gen. The Friendship Kyorugi Competition, which took place at the Banditbul Gymnasium, served as a rehearsal for the taekwondo competition at the 2010 Singapore Youth Olympic Games. A total of 100 athletes are to compete in the taekwondo tournament at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games. "The friendly competition is partly intended to give the camp participants an opportunity to adapt themselves in advance to the taekwondo competition at the 2010 Singapore Youth Olympic Games," said WTF President Chungwon Choue. The competition featured five weight categories for each male and female division, just as at the 2010 Singapore Youth Olympic Games. The weight categories for the male division are -48kg, -55kg, -63kg, -73kg and +73kg, while those for the female division are -44kg, -49, -55kg, -63kg and +63kg. The camp participants received two days of intensive training on kyorugi and poomsae from Korean taekwondo masters. Among the students were two athletes with a disability. They were Mr. Gersson Josue Mejia Alvarez from Guatemala and Iran's Mehdi Pour Rannama, both of them participated in the 1st WTF World Para-Taekwondo Championships held in Baku, Azerbaijan on June 10, 2009. In the female division, Korea and China clinched two gold medals each and Thailand won one gold medal. In the male category, Korea, Turkey, Afghanistan, Iran, Greece and Jordan won one gold medal each, showing an even level of taekwondo techniques. Prior to the final matches, there was an opening ceremony of the Friendship Kyorugi Competition. A special event was held during the ceremony: to break wooden blocks on which participants' bad habits were written. --__--__-- Message: 6 From: Ray To: The_Dojang Date: Fri, 14 Aug 2009 08:19:41 -0700 Subject: [The_Dojang] Schedules Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Schedules for U-24 & Junior Team Trials USA Taekwondo The tentative match schedules for the upcoming U-24 and Junior National Team Trials in Colorado Springs have been drafted.
