August 27, 2009 JoongAng Daily On a morning Saemaeul train headed for this southeastern city, I closed my eyes and envisioned the scene: Gyeongju was once the royal capital of the flourishing Silla Dynasty (57 B.C.-A.D.935) known for its goldsmithing techniques and artistry, and is now a popular destination for school trips. As soon as the train passed the milepost that read “Gyeongju City” the scenery changed abruptly, perhaps the closest thing to time travel I’ll ever experience. Living up to its title of “historic city,” houses with traditional tiled roofs dotted the landscape, ancient tombs as big as houses - sometimes bigger - appeared one after another, and temples buried deep in the mountains came into partial view. The city was rustic but not messy, idyllic but not boring and small yet somehow panoramic. High on Seondeok’s popularity The park opened in March 2007, more than 20 years after a committee was set up to build a “Silla Village.” Construction dragged on due to numerous reasons, stopping for 10 years from 1996 to 2006. Upon opening it made its share of headlines by introducing Korea’s first upscale, luxurious hanok (traditional Korean home) hotel, La Gung. But the real big break came recently as the ongoing MBC drama “Queen Seondeok” is being shot here. The number of daily visitors to the park more than doubled to 5,000 during weekdays from last year, and is at 7,000 on weekends, according to officials. Ratings for the drama continue to soar, breaking the 40 percent mark last week. In fact the number of visitors to the city is expected to triple, according to city officials’ estimates, with the city hosting numerous events related to Queen Seondeok, a woman who led the Silla Dynasty. The set for Queen Seondeok consists of the palace, the royal village and a mountain retreat for hwarang, or the elite military group of young Silla men. Of these, the royal village, dubbed the “1,000-year- old Ancient City” would interest history buffs like me as it showcases different residential styles for different classes. There were five different classes for the Silla royals. There are other folk villages in Korea, but few specialize in one era like Shilla Millennium Park. Entertainment and education Shilla Millennium Park takes pride in its shows. The horseback martial arts performance that takes place at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. every day is similar to the one at the Korean Folk Village in Yongin, Gyeonggi. But the show that takes place outdoors three times a day - 10:30 a.m., 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. - on the main performance stage is certainly different from shows at other folk villages. It involves more dynamic action and special effects like the city wall splitting in two, a battle at sea and warriors falling into the water. I only caught the night show, which officials tell me was “less action and more romance” than the day show. This one was about the tragic love story of the Silla queen. Times for shows differ for weekends and there is no English guidance on the plot. But officials of the park hope the attractions are also educational. “We hope visitors can learn and experience the history and culture of Silla,” said Min Dae-sik of the park’s planning team. Visitors can learn to make pottery, wood crafts and even gold jewelry, among other options. Officials have also utilized and embedded stories from Silla history, such as the entrance to the park that took its motif from Seokguram, a cave temple in Gyeongju, and a hamburger shop shaped like Emile Bell, the city’s bronze bell cast in 771 C.E. The park is open from 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. every day. A day pass is 18,000 won ($14) for adults, 13,000 won for children between 17 and 13 years old and 11,000 won for children 12 years old and younger.
