Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Jye, I have to agree with your assessment. A local school billed itself as a TKD school, advertised itself near the local grammar and middle schools, and grew rapidly. Unfortunately, they dont' say that they are governed by a kenpo organization (one I never heard of and couldn't find on the interenet beyond the school's website). And they won't answer any questions about the inconsistencies until you sign a year long contract with them. On the flip side, there are five brothers that all have their own individual martial arts schools that teach legitimate TKD. If you look at their bios, all of them are the same: they are all lawyers, medical doctors and taught geology. And I thought I was busy with my career! Oh, and the five all claim to be 9th dans in TKD and Hapkido. Their schools also move back and forth across the state every other year (about the time that their black belts start asking about why their kukiwon certifications are taking so long). And their few long term black belts show up to local competitions wearing green and blue belts. Hmmm. --__--__-- Message: 2 To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Wed, 09 Sep 2009 09:29:01 -0400 From: zisheged@aol.com Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: How do we know schools are legit? Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Many good points were brought up in Jye's last e-mail. I happen to know of a Korean "Master" in NY that came to the US as a 5th dan and 7 months later became a 9th dan. While there is a good deal of chicanery, I feel the Kukkiwon system is a good one. Now...where is the boundary between incorporating allied skills from other arts and a blurred mixed martial art? I would look for a school that teachers the poomsae according to the Kukkiwon guidelines, that follows competion rules for sparring and one that's been around a long time. Other dynamics might be the size of the school, the verification of the masters credentials and the nature of training. Personally, I like schools that are heavy on strength and endurance training. One might ask if a school participates in tournaments and with which schools.? I personally am very strict on who I admit to my dojang, but in any event, I respect any master that is very honest with students and parents. Take a good look at fee structure s as well. I know of a SooBahkDo master in Elcino California that charged $6,000 for a 6th dan. That's a bit high, eh?
