The governing body changed its rules in January to overturn a 2007 decision that formally banned female competitors wearing the traditional hijab under protective headgear. "This measure means that taekwondo is one of the few sports that treats women and men equally in the Muslim world," said Dae Won Moon, chairman of the WTF's technical committee, in a statement Wednesday. "We believe that our respect for others' cultures and beliefs will allow taekwondo to enhance its status as an Olympic sport." The federation expects women from 140 countries including Afghanistan, Iran and the United Arab Emirates to compete at the Oct. 14-18 worlds in Copenhagen. It banned the hijab days before the 2007 event in Beijing after being asked for guidance by the Canadian federation after two Muslim girls were banned from a competition in Quebec. The WTF said then it did not recognize any religion and did not allow anything to be worn under headgear for safety reasons. It then allowed Muslim women taking part at the Beijing Olympics tournament to wear a headscarf, including Iran's Sara Khosh Jamal who reached the quarter-finals of the under 49-kilo weight category. --__--__-- Message: 2 From: Ray Date: Wed, 16 Sep 2009 17:38:45 -0700 To: The_Dojang Subject: [The_Dojang] 2010 Youth Olympic Games Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Athlete Selection Procedures for 2010 Youth Olympic Games The selection procedures have been finalized for the 2010 Youth Olympic Games. I have seen in different videos what appear to be approximately 1-1/2" to 2" thick concrete slabs. Does anyone know of a place to purchase specifically for martial arts use? Or is this something that can be obtained from Home Depot? You can purchase capping stone at a business that supplies concrete items such as block, steps, and other items that are fabricated from concrete. There are basically two types of capping stone. One is made of lightweight material (no rock in the mixture for strength) and the standard capping stone that does contain rock. I suggest you try both to understand the difference in power that it takes to break. If you break using spacers such as pencils, you can break three or four as easily as one. That has been my experience. It's really a mind set and is a test of faith in your technique. I prefer the standard capping stone for those reasons. If you can break a couple of them you've got some serious skills.
