I was at a seminar about two years ago with a very well known martial arts instructor who teaches pressure point fighting. The version I heard at the seminar was that this martial arts instructor who shall remain nameless was a trainer wtih Ali for years and taught him pressure point fighting secrets and adopted it for professional boxing and claimed it was the reason for Ali's success because all of Ali's KOs came from pressure point hits. Subsequent to the seminar, when this martial arts instructor sold Ali's training camp recently, there was a quote in the press that this martial arts instructor taught Ali how to punch without moving his shoulders so his opponents couldn't see what was coming, but no mention of the pressure points. I didn't see any confirmatory statements by Ali or his people about it. Hello every one I have a question about something that I have seen a few times on the net and on magazines. Although I have looked all over the internet I have not been able to find any more details about it. This is the quote that I have found "Mr. Rhee taught me Tae Kwon Do Accu-Punch; it is so fast, you can hardly see it." Muhammad Ali I am a big fan of Ali and I do TKD so I am a bit driven by this. Can anyone help? A student of Master Rhee perhaps? The fight in question was the 2nd Sonny Liston / Clay(Ali) fight, 1965. It is widely accepted that Liston took a dive in that fight. Why? Either because Liston owed $ to the mafia and was told to take a dive - or- because Liston feared for his safety from the Nation of Islam (Clay had just joined the Black Muslims). Check Mark Kram's book, Ghosts of Manila. Ali termed it the "anchor punch". Others termed it the phantom punch. The only thing I saw the defender do wrong was that one extra punch to the face at about 1:50 when the attacker was already down and not looking too interested in getting up. That's the kind of stuff that can get you in legal trouble, if you cross the line from defender to attacker... Fortunately, he chilled after that and walked off... All that dancing and posturing, and it was really over in about 20-22 seconds, starting when the attacker decided to go around the bike to get to the defender... Took long enough to get going, it almost made me think the attacker was making sure there was a big enough crowd to watch the beatdown he was gonna lay down on the defender... Not so fast there, buddy... :) And yes, the defender did a great job of trying to verbally de-escalate the situation... --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang Subscribe or Unsubscribe: http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2009: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
