Korea has managed to come out on top in the medal count at the world championships from the inaugural tourney held in Seoul in 1973 up to the 2007 event in Beijing, China. In fact, Korea boasts an all-time record of 142 gold medals, 21 silver and 23 bronze for a total of 186 medals at the world championships. Spain is second on the all-time world medal winners’ list with 18 gold, 21 silver and 51 bronze medals for a total of 90. To prepare for the upcoming world championship competition, the current national team, consisting of eight male and eight female taekwondo athletes, trained at the National Training Center in Taeneung, northern Seoul, and in Taebaek, Gangwon. While Korea has been dominant in taekwondo in the past, the current team has been deemed considerably weaker due to its collective lack of experience. There are some recognizable names, such as Choi Yeon-ho (-54 kg), Nam Yoon-bae (-87 kg) and Lim Su-jeong (-62 kg) and three others, set to compete for the top spot on the podium. However, 10 taekwondo athletes will be representing Korea for the first time in Copenhagen. While they are said to be well-prepared and determined, all of them lack experience on the international stage. These athletes will look to take advantage of new rules that award two to three points for head kicks and a single point for kicks to the body. The national team’s coaching staff is said to have customized training methods to perfect each athlete’s kick techniques to the face. “Unlike in the past, there is no gap in skill level between Korean taekwondo athletes and athletes from other places around the world. In order to take a clear lead in a match, we must make good use of the new scoring system,” said men’s team coach Park Jong-man. “Our athletes are in good condition. We are expecting three gold medals in men’s competitions and three to four golds in the women’s events.” The World Taekwondo Federation-organized event will be held at the Ballerup Arena through Oct. 18. With so many changes to the scoring system and a decreased fighting surface, fighters will be urged to be on the attack, which is expected to produce some exciting matches. In addition, the voting for the WTF presidency will take place at the WTF General Assembly today in Copenhagen. --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Mon, 12 Oct 2009 21:25:11 -0400 From: Lee Morgan To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: beyond kiyap....lol Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Why not be a gymnast? --__--__-- Message: 3 From: "Drew Burns" To: Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Re: beyond kiyap....lol Date: Tue, 13 Oct 2009 12:32:01 +1100 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Or with screams like that perhaps a tennis player? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lee Morgan" To: > Why not be a gymnast? --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Mon, 12 Oct 2009 21:30:51 -0400 From: Lee Morgan To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: 5 year old black belt Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net What does a belt mean anyway----especially in relation to a true martial art? Belts have become meaningless as a designation of martial ability. However, I would agree that they do provide many people with a goal. I use to be totally against this type of thing because I thought that it "cheapened the rank". But then I realized a focus on rank cheapens the martial art. So now I believe that anything that can help a person achieve something that they may not think themselves capable of, or that will give them a since of self-worth is a good thing. Just my two cents. --__--__-- Message: 5 From: "Thomas Gordon" To: Subject: RE: [The_Dojang] 5 year old black belt Date: Mon, 12 Oct 2009 23:26:52 -0500 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Old argument of how old is old enough? In our school, we use nine as the minimum age. I've seen five year old black belts and it bothered me. But that's me. I've seen schools that only offer classes to adults and some to adult males only. To me, that's a shame because children and women need martial arts more than a guy who would sign up at a "guy only" martial art school. Oh well, no good answer. At least not one I can think of. I think we've beat up on young black belts at various times. So I don't have much to add there, since I've seen pros and cons of blacks belts at that age. I've seen some who really "get it" when it comes to techniques and others who simply learned the forms and earned the rank. All I will say when watching her move is, she looks like a five year old in just about every way. *bows* - Bert Edens Butcher's Martial Arts --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang Subscribe or Unsubscribe: http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2009: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
