Choue defeated WTF vice president and IOC member Nat Indrapana of Thailand 104-45 in a vote ahead of the World Taekwondo Championships. One person abstained. The vote was held amid allegations of vote buying and slander. Four candidates were originally running for the post to head the international governing body of the Korean martial art. However, European Taekwondo Federation president Athanasios Pragalos and WTF vice president Park Soo-nam pulled out. Pragalos has made allegations of vote buying but failed to make it clear who was attempting to buy votes. Pragalos and Park openly backed Indrapana, with Park saying Indrapana as an IOC member could reconcile the world taekwondo body with the Olympic movement. On top of the allegations, former WTC president Kim Un-yong of South Korea has been rumored to behind a campaign to unseat Choue, who has been in office since 2004. Anonymous faxes sent from South Korea have been circulating in recent weeks with negative information about Choue's leadership. Taekwondo's inclusion in the Olympics has often been clouded in scandal, perhaps in part because Kim, the man who championed the sport's inclusion in the games, is a former IOC vice president who has spent time in prison on corruption charges. I know of an 8-year old that is a 2nd dan!!!! My point of view is this: no one under 16 gets a black belt and a black belt is not guaranteed to everyone. By the time someone hits 5th gup in my school, I tell them the possibility of their achieving a black belt. I have denied black belts to about 2 dozen over the last ten years. This is my prospective and I'm not preaching here to anyone. I know I'm a hardass on this topic ans so what about it???? Everyone who comes in and pays their money to you should get a black belt! How can you judge the worth, skill, knowledge, how they reflect on your school, and all of the other intangible qualities involved in making sure everyone is a black belt. You should not score any tournament you hold or go too, I mean you might make someone feel bad because they are seen as "not as good" as the winner in the match. Everyone who pays their money should get a black belt. Heck, with the way the Nobel Peace Prize was given - why not just evaluate a new student on how good you think they will be, and how hard you think they will practice, and the skill the will develop in the next 50 years of dedicated practice and just save time and award them a 9th dan black belt - even though they are 5 or 6 years old and have had only a couple of weeks lessons. BUT - they would have to have paid for their lessons of course - and any associated test fees........jeez how can you be such a hard ass? By the way I hope no one will misses the fact I am saying these things with my tongue firmly in cheek........ Screaming, shouting or yelling has nothing to do with a kihap. Glad the KMA have the poom system instead of dan for children. Minors wearing a BB just is wrong on every level. But good techniques is just that, regardless of the art. Enjoy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFM-xRKbSec JRH www.FargoHapkido.com --__--__-- Message: 6 From: The_Dojang Date: Wed, 14 Oct 2009 13:58:10 -0700 To: The_Dojang Subject: [The_Dojang] easy on the eyes Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wsQE6K3a6s&NR=1 --__--__-- Message: 7 From: "Master Mark Seidel" To: Cc: Subject: RE: [The_Dojang] Re: 5 year old black belt Date: Wed, 14 Oct 2009 17:14:31 -0400 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I am still against BB under 12 yrs old, after that they must achieve a level superior to all other students at that school, understand their self worth and demonstrate an extraordinary ability. Belts have become meaningless as a designation of martial ability. However, I would agree that they do provide many people with a goal. I use to be totally against this type of thing because I thought that it "cheapened the rank". But then I realized a focus on rank cheapens the martial art. So now I believe that anything that can help a person achieve something that they may not think themselves capable of, or that will give them a since of self-worth is a good thing. Just my two cents. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang Subscribe or Unsubscribe: http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2009: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
